Words often seen on product labels are usually open to interpretation from one company or consumer to the next. As a result, one word can mean different things to different people, making it unhelpful as a measuring stick for the information you need.
With this in mind, we want to help our customers understand what it is we're doing with full transparency and in terms that have clear definitions so that you get the information that matters to you most.
Our Biome-Friendly Assay
We've developed a patent-pending assay to screen ingredients and the final formula to ensure that they are A-OK for AOBs.
We use our peacekeeper bacteria as our core measurement for testing and ensuring our the biome-friendliness of our products. These Ammonia-Oxidizing Bacteria are one of the most sensitive microorganisms on our skin. Because of this, we believe that testing against it is a great measurement for the overall impact on the skin biome. If an ingredient or product is friendly to this specific bacteria, then it will also be friendly to the other delicate microorganisms of the biome as well.
Early on we found that preservatives have a negative effect on AOB. This shouldn't be surprising because preservatives exist for the sole purpose of preventing bacteria and other microorganisms from growing in products. No wonder AOB didn't do well with preservatives, and why you won't find them in current biome- friendly formulas.
Historically, the motivation for including preservatives is a good one, but we didn't know until know what potential effect preservatives have on our skin biome. This is a new factor to consider in product formulation.
The Biome-Friendly ingredient selection process starts long before the screening process above. It starts when sourcing ingredients. Many raw materials on their own come with a preservative. We have to actively seek out unpreserved raw materials to test and use in development.

For the reasons above, we refer to our ingredients as "plant-based" over something like "natural". All of our ingredients are botanically-sourced, which is a fancy way of saying that they're derived from plants.
Our biome-friendly products strike a balance with science and nature, allowing AOB to thrive in the modern world. Unpreserved, plant-based products nurture AOB and maintain harmony in the skin biome.
We formulate our products with non-petroleum based ingredients, which are biodegradable and more environmentally sustainable than ingredients that are derived from petroleum. All of our ingredients are derived from plant-based materials.
We try to create products that are as good to the environment as they are on our microbiome. So, our products are made without ingredients derived from petroleum, are unpreserved, and are easily biodegradable.
A lot can happen on the way to bottling a product, along the supply chain as well as during manufacturing. Despite the careful steps taken by our suppliers and manufacturers, there is always the potential for the presence of impurities in raw materials, the occurrence of cross-contamination during manufacturing, or formation of by-products after formulation. Because of this, we test our finished products to make sure that no unwanted chemicals make their way into our products by surprise. This testing is not required, but something we believe important to do.

CAMPAIGN FOR SAFE COSMETICS:
A project of the Breast Cancer Fund, The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics works to promote the development of safer cosmetics. The Campaign focuses on educating the public, working towards legislative changes, and advocating for corporate accountability. Since 2004, the Campaign has helped reduce the use of toxic chemicals in cosmetics and increase the level of disclosure and transparency of cosmetic companies.
THE MICROBIOME COALITION:
In 2016, the White House announced the launch of The National Microbiome Initiative (NMI). With $121 million in federal funding and $400 million in private funding, the initiative aims to provide a big boost to our understanding of the global microbiome.
